L-R: Former national vice chairman
of the PDP; Prince Uche Secondus,Ondo state governor; Dr Olusegun Mimiko and
secretary of the caretaker committee; Chief Ben Obi at the event yesterday
Speaking at the inauguration of the
Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led caretaker committee of the party, Mimiko charged all
the party faithfuls to work together for the success of the PDP especially
towards the 2019 general elections. Mimiko who spoke on behalf of all the PDP
governors, hailed the contributions of senior members of the PDP like former
information minister; Professor Jerry Gana and former deputy Senate president,
Alhaji Ibrahim Mantu for their intervention in the party’s affairs over the
last few weeks.
Mimiko also spoke about the state of
the nation, describing the uproar across the nation as a first, capable of
destroying the nation. His words: ”In all my years in this country as an
adolescent and as a politically active adult, and I have been for a few years
now, dying has never been this cheap in this country. ”Beheading, dying has
never come to the forefront of our national discourse. It seems that everyday
you open the newspaper, it is either beheading here, people dying there and
carting them away to secret graves. ”These are the worst of times for this
nation, our economy is bad, yes! But what is more troubling, and every Nigerian
that is truly called a Nigerian should be worried about, this is an era I call
unbridled centrifugalism. ”All the centrifugal forces threatening to tear this
nation apart. These forces are gaining strength, but where they are getting strength,
I don’t know but I guess it is the mis-management of the affairs of this nation
is one of the sources of this renewed strength of these forces. ”We want to
have a nation, we want to have a Nigeria that is based on justice, we want a
government that protects the people of Nigeria. ”We want a nation where those
who have the mandate of the people will stand up for the security of this
nation. These are very very worrisome times in this nation.” Mimiko called for
prayers for Nigeria, but added that apart from prayers, the country needs PDP
because according to him, the party is good at bringing this Nigerians
together. ”Whatever anybody may say about PDP, PDP has not been a perfect
party, PDP has its own limitations, but one thing that anybody cannot deny, is
that PDP is a pan-Nigerian party and has succeeded to bringing everybody
together in this country,” Mimiko said.
At the event, the PDP shelved aside
as members of the party united in prayers for President Muhammadu Buhari. Led
by the deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu, the PDP prayed for the full
recovery of the president and wished him success in his endeavours.
